A Thank You Letter

Dear Church Family,

I begin this week's article with a big, "Thank You!" I was so touched by your gift last week for Pastor Appreciation month. But reading all the cards and notes you wrote—over 100 of them—has been even more meaningful. Truly, my heart has been overwhelmed and humbled.

So, as I thought about my article this week, I decided that I wanted to do the same for you. The writing prompt on your cards was, "Pastor Karl, you inspire me because…" Therefore, today's article begins:

St. Andrew's by-the-Sea, you inspire me because:
As a congregation, you always say, "Yes." In the last 5 years, I have brought some crazy ideas about how we might connect, grow, and serve. And it feels like every time I do, you, as a church family, are willing to give it a try. Whether it's trying a new mission project, wearing costumes to church, or having the worship band and choir sing together, you enthusiastically respond. For a pastor, this is such a wonderful gift—especially in a time when I know many colleagues who feel they are fighting an uphill battle to try something new in the church.

I am inspired by your genuine and authentic joy at welcoming people into the church family. Look, every church says they are welcoming, but I can honestly say I've never served a congregation more genuinely excited about welcoming new people. You've invited neighbors and people you've met at Costco (literally!), and when they show up, you greet them with joy. This isn't the same church I came to four years ago—you've transformed it through your invitation and warmth.

You are an inspiration in your desire to grow in your faith. I have been overwhelmed by your response to our Bible Studies and groups. Even more, I am inspired by your hunger to know more about the scriptures, where they come from, and how they fit into our lives (even when it's a hard book like Romans!). You dig deep and seek to let God's spirit open your hearts to hear where God is speaking to you through the Word.

Finally, I am inspired by the many ways you are the hands and feet of Jesus through your generous hearts. I see you checking in on Sunday mornings with those who are struggling, and I know many of you are quietly serving in ways that go far beyond our church walls.

It truly is my honor and joy to be your pastor. Kristen and I are blessed by the way you've welcomed us into the St. Andrew's family. Thank you for continuing to bear the image of God so beautifully.

With God's Love, Pastor Karl
